Citizens and Researchers Collaborate for a Sustainable Future

Researchers are increasingly engaging citizens in shaping the future of innovative products, services, and technologies. By involving the public in their work and roadmaps, researchers are turning them into “travel mates” on the journey to new discoveries and improvements in daily life. The EU-funded project SHARPER is driving this inclusive approach as part of its contribution to European Researchers’ Night, encouraging citizen involvement in research across Italy.

SHARPER is bringing together key players from academia, industry, and civil society to focus on the five major missions of Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding program for research and innovation. Through creative online content and common strategies for researcher training, the project aims to foster collaboration and enthusiasm for scientific discovery.

For the first time, our partner the University Carlo Bo of Urbino (UNIURB) participated in European Researchers’ Night on 27th September 2024, joining universities across Italy in a synchronized celebration of science. Citizens were invited to explore UNIURB’s laboratories, and engage in a range of activities such as lectures, scientific demonstrations, street shows, and research events, all designed to bring science closer to the community. The CheMatSustain project was also highlighted as part of UNIURB’s research, showcasing the university’s contributions to sustainable chemistry and materials science. This initiative underscores the growing importance of collaboration between citizens and researchers, fostering a shared passion for innovation and sustainability across Europe.
