CheMatSustain at the Baltic University Programme’s 35-year celebratory webinars

On October 1st, CheMatSustain was featured in of the BUP’s 35-year celebratory webinars. Under the title ‘Designing circular recovery: from safe materials to restored ecosystems’, the webinar explored how the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework can support the creation of safer, more sustainable, and circular bio-based materials. It brought together methods for evaluating chemicals and nanomaterials alongside new developments in recyclable biopolymers, bio-based plastics, and innovative textile chemistries.

It also explored how these solutions can support ecosystem and soil restoration, particularly in areas affected by war. By connecting material innovation with circular economy principles, environmental protection, and resilient recovery, the webinar highlighted the potential of sustainable materials to contribute to environmental rehabilitation and long-term recovery.

The CheMatSustain project was introduced by Dr. Ahmed Waqas, who highlighted the work of the Technical University of Denmark within the project, specifically on the safety and sustainability assessment of chemicals and nanomaterials. The presentation discussed how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Risk Assessment (RA), and Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessment (AESA) can support Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approaches.

Dr. Waqas demonstrated how these approaches can be integrated into material development and product innovation to enable informed decision-making and promote the design of safer and more sustainable materials.
